About us

Established in 1998, NPS enables people to make better decisions about medicines and medical tests, leading to better health and economic outcomes.

We help health professionals keep up to date with the latest evidence and provide individuals with the tools and knowledge to make better decisions.

Globally recognised for our work in quality use of medicines, we believe individuals are gatekeepers of their health decisions. Everyone is entitled to impartial information that enables them to navigate their choices and get the most from their health professionals.

Towards a medicinewise Australia

We want best practice decision-making to be well understood, embedded in health systems and put into action every day. We want all Australians to be medicinewise and experience the health and economic benefits this brings.

Being medicinewise means knowing the right questions to ask about medicines and medical tests and where to get trusted information. For professionals it is putting into practice the principles of quality use of medicines and medical tests, which involve safe, wise and judicious prescribing and dispensing. For the general public, being medicinewise starts with asking “Why?”

In a complex health and communications environment, it can be hard to find trusted information. NPS resources and tools are evidence-based and impartial and developed in conjunction with expert advisory groups and our extensive networks across the health sector.

Medicines are one of our most common medical interventions. Anything you seek a therapeutic effect from—regardless where you bought it—is a medicine.

Are you medicinewise?
