Becoming a member of NPS Becoming a member of NPS

NPS membership consists of Voting Members (organisations), Associate Members (organisations and individuals) and Honorary Members (individuals).

Voting members

Voting members are organisations that have members that are representative of quality use of medicines stakeholders, can demonstrate a commitment to quality use of medicines and support the National Medicines Policy.

Benefits of being a voting member

There are a number of benefits for an organisation in being a voting member of NPS. All voting members:

  • have the right to nominate individuals to the NPS Board
  • have voting rights at the AGM
  • receive outcomes papers from the NPS Board meetings
  • have the scope to raise issues for consideration by the NPS Board
  • have the opportunity to take part in formal NPS planning and strategic meetings
  • have the opportunity to put forward representatives for NPS committees and advisory groups
  • have access to all NPS publications
  • receive regular Member e-news
  • have the opportunity to make contributions to Member e-news
  • are profiled and linked on the NPS website
  • have the opportunity to contribute to the NPS website about their quality use of medicines activities, conferences and other events
  • are offered endorsement of specific or relevant programs and activities
  • are kept informed about NPS activities
  • have access to a direct contact at NPS who can progress any requests and promote their needs
  • the right to nominate individuals for honorary membership.

Criteria for becoming a voting member

To become a Voting Member of NPS your organisation needs to be a legal entity which:

  • is, or has members that are representative of quality use of medicines and medical tests stakeholders
  • can demonstrate a commitment to quality use of medicines and medical tests through its objectives and/or actions
  • supports the National Medicines Policy
  • has confirmed ongoing membership of NPS and
  • does not have a real or perceived conflict of interest with NPS objectives and activities.

Voting Members are appointed to one of four classes of membership: Government, Health Practitioner, Consumer and Health Systems.

As a member of NPS your organisation will have a responsibility to:

  • include quality use of medicines in the organisation's documentation (e.g. strategic plan)
  • engage with other partners to progress quality use of medicines and/or medical test issues
  • nominate individuals for NPS Advisory Groups

Associate members

Associate Members are individuals or organisations that can demonstrate an interest in and commitment to quality use of medicines and/or medical tests.

The benefits of being an associate member of NPS include:

  • receiving Member e-News
  • having access to NPS reports and publications
  • discounted registration for the biennial National Medicines Symposium
  • attendance at the AGM in a non-voting capacity
  • the opportunity for cross promotion of events and conferences on the NPS website where appropriate
  • the right to nominate individuals for honorary membership.

The annual fee for asssociate membership is $60 per annum for individuals and $200 per annum for organisations.

Honorary members

The honorary membership category was introduced in 2011 to publicly recognise individuals whose outstanding and long term commitment to improving quality use of medicines and medical tests who are not a current employee or director of NPS.

In July of each year we invite our members, directors, advisory groups and staff to nominate suitable individuals as honorary members.  The Board shortlists and appoints up to three individuals as honourary members each year.  Honorary members are announced at the AGM usually held in November.  Honorary membership is for life or until the person resigns their membership.
