Seventy general practice, prescribing and clinical data experts gathered in Sydney on 19 June 2008 to discuss ways of improving access to and use of general practice clinical data.
The purpose of exploring opportunities that these 'Islands of information' provide was to build better prescribing and ultimately improve health outcomes.
Forum participants investigated issues associated with the quality of clinical data, data extraction from clinical systems and ways to achieve more efficient and effective access to and use of this data.
The program included two GP keynote speakers: Dr Gillian Braunold from the NHS in the UK and Dr Tony Lembke, Clinical Chair of the Australian Primary Care Collaboratives. Both speakers shared their experiences of the use of clinical indicators in general practice to improve quality prescribing. The forum program included presentations on medical software and government perspectives and case studies detailing progress on current Australian initiatives as well as a panel discussion.
