Talk to your health professional

Always ask before using pain relievers

Your doctor, pharmacist or other health professional can advise you about which pain relievers you can take safely. This is especially important if you are taking certain medicines or have a particular condition.

Tell them about all the medicines you are taking

Talk to your health professional about all of your medicines, including over-the-counter pain relievers, herbal remedies and vitamin supplements. Keeping an up-to-date list of all the medicines you take helps you to keep track of them (you can order or download a Medicines List from NPS for free). Bring the medicine list with you when you go to your doctor and pharmacy, when you go on holidays or go to hospital.

Review your medicines and management plan regularly

If you are using prescribed medicines for pain, your health professional should review your medicines and pain management plan regularly. This is especially important if you often use additional over-the-counter pain relievers.
