What is a sore throat?
A sore throat (throat infection) is often a symptom of another respiratory tract infection, such as a cold or the flu.
Sore throats are very common, especially in children and teenagers, and most adults will have at least 2 or 3 every year. The medical name for a sore throat is pharyngitis, and they can be caused by viruses or bacteria.
Most sore throats are not serious. The symptoms will usually improve within 7 days and can be treated at home. Some people are more at risk of developing complications from a sore throat and may need to see their doctor.
