Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)

Find reliable, independent diagnosis and treatment information about heartburn and reflux written by Australian experts. This includes resources for consumers and health professionals.

About this condition

Reflux – also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (or GORD) – occurs when stomach acid moves up into your oesophagus (food pipe), causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat known as heartburn. Up to 1 in 5 people experience heartburn at least once a week.

If you experience heartburn and reflux symptoms that are mild and/or infrequent (occur once a week or less), lifestyle changes may be enough to relieve the symptoms.

If you experience symptoms that are severe or occur twice a week or more, your doctor may recommend heartburn and reflux medicines in addition to lifestyle changes.

For health professionals

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is one of the most frequently managed problems in Australian general practice. Pharmacological management of GORD is based primarily on the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). However, not all patients with symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux need regular PPI therapy.
