Who is at risk of stroke?

Factors that can increase your risk of having a stroke are generally similar to those that can cause heart attacks and include:

  • smoking
  • unhealthy eating
  • drinking more than the recommended daily alcohol limit (2 standard drinks per day)
  • high blood cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • type 2 diabetes
  • previous stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or heart disease
  • low physical activity
  • obesity or being overweight
  • older age
  • being male
  • a family history of stroke
  • atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat).
