What causes bronchiolitis?

A virus is the most common cause of bronchiolitis in babies aged 12 months or younger.

Respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis, but the viruses that cause the common cold (rhinovirus), and flu (influenza virus), can also cause bronchiolitis.

Bacteria can also cause bronchiolitis, but this is rare.
