People over 50: Book a group NPS medicines information session People over 50: Book a group NPS medicines information session

NPS works in partnership with the COTA organisations to deliver free medicines information sessions to seniors groups.

If you're part of a community group or know a group of people who would like to learn about their medicines, COTA can work with you to run free, interactive medicines information sessions.

Introduction to quality use of medicines (QUM)

This session will help you learn:

  • what is a medicine?
  • how to get better results from the medicines you take
  • how to avoid medicine mix-ups
  • what questions to ask your doctor and pharmacist
  • what you can do to enjoy better health.

Brand name or generic medicine — choosing wisely

This generic medicines session complements the introductory session on QUM.

This session will help you learn:

  • a generic medicine has the same active ingredient as the original brand of medicine
  • to get to know your medicine choices
  • there are many generic medicines available, so you may often be asked to make a choice
  • in Australia all prescription medicines, including generic medicines, have to meet the same stringent government quality standards
  • to talk openly to your doctor or pharmacist about generic medicines.

More than medicines — living well (New)

The session on More than medicines — living well* session builds on the messages of the first QUM session and provides information about the benefits of modifying lifestyle factors that impact on the health and wellbeing of seniors, particularly those living with chronic conditions.

This session will help you learn:

  • how to become a more active partner in the management of your health
  • how to make lifestyle changes to benefit your health
  • how to seek and evaluate independent medicine information
  • specific information about managing type 2 diabetes, chronic pain or hypertension (based on audience needs).

* Before commencing this session you must first attend the Quality use of medicines session.
