Portfolio competition awards night, 2007

Jane Poon, Hoang Nguyen Kim Ngan and Flora Varitimos won top honours at the Families get to know their medicines ethnic schools portfolio competition awards ceremony held 18 October 2007 in Brisbane.

More than 270 guests, including students and their families and teachers, attended the awards ceremony.

The Families get to know their medicines program was piloted in Term 3 with students aged 10–16 from Chinese, Vietnamese and Greek After Hours Ethnic Schools in Queensland.

The curriculum combined learning family language and culture with learning about medicines.

The portfolio competition was designed to encourage students to complete take-home activities with their families, and share information with them about the safe use of medicines.

The awards ceremony recognised the students' outstanding portfolios.

Also honoured at the awards ceremony were the winning schools, Tzu-Chi Academy Australia Brisbane, Lac Hong Vietnamese School and Greek School of St George, along with the 57 finalists.

Prizes were awarded to the winning Chinese, Vietnamese and Greek students and their schools. The winning students won a book of 10 movie vouchers donated by Birch Carroll and Coyle Cinemas. The winning schools received an $800 gift voucher for classroom resources.

Diversity Health Institute gave $2000 towards the evening.

In recognition of the wide age differences within each class and the complexity of the material, special merit prizes of a dinner at a local restaurant were also awarded. Yvonne Huang, Hoang Ngoc Diep and Maria Bellas, younger participants who had shown exceptional effort in their portfolios, won the special merit prizes.

The Families get to know their medicines program has been designed and implemented in partnership with the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia (FECCA), the Queensland Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Centre, the Ethnic Schools Association Queensland Inc. (ESAQ) and Community Languages Australia (CLA).
