NPS is supporting consumer health organisations to incorporate quality use of medicines (QUM) messages into their existing programs:

Arthritis NSW

About the project

Arthritis NSW are holding workshops on pain management throughout NSW. These workshops will be conducted via our usual regional meetings of arthritis branches along with specific workshops targeting the Chinese community in four Sydney areas.

The second strategy of this project is to develop a pain management tool (in English and Chinese), which consumers can take along to their doctor to discuss their pain management. View current pain management tools here.

Target group

This program is targeted at people living with chronic pain. In addition to the general population, we will be specifically targeting the Chinese community in Sydney.

Outcomes

  • Produce an English and Chinese resource to facilitate discussion between a consumer and their doctor regarding the management of pain.
  • Promote QUM messages to Arthritis NSW members, the general community and the Chinese community in Sydney.
  • Develop partnerships between divisions of general practice, pharmacists, the Chronic Pain Association and Chinese organisations.
  • Evaluate how people manage pain and what is require to improve that management.

Arthritis SA

About the project

The goal of the project is to implement an education strategy among culturally and linguistically diverse communities to improve access to information and education about the management of musculo-skeletal problems with a specific focus on medicines for people in chronic pain.

Arthritis SA will embed QUM messages within the current services in the following ways:

  • Include QUM fact sheets in the information packs which are sent to all callers of the Telephone Advisory Service.
  • Include QUM messages in the community seminars held in metropolitan and country areas.
  • Provide translated QUM information sheets to participants at our community meetings with culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
  • Promote QUM messages in arthritis publications.

Target group

This program is targeted at people living with chronic pain. In addition to the general population, we will be specifically targeting Greek, Italian, Vietnamese and Chinese communities in Adelaide.

Outcomes

  • Promote QUM messages to Arthritis SA members, the general community and the Greek, Italian, Vietnamese and Chinese communities in Adelaide.
  • Engage local ethno-specific organisations.
  • Offer a module that includes QUM information and management of musculo-skeletal conditions.

Diabetes Tasmania

About the project

Diabetes Tasmania will:

  • Integrate QUM messages into existing education programs and publications.
  • Extend existing programs to target those from the Chinese and German communities.
  • Produce a DVD for consumers covering topics such as diet, exercise, QUM and self management techniques. This DVD will be translated for Chinese and German speaking consumers.

Target group

This program is targeted at people living with type 2 diabetes. In addition to the general population we will be specifically targeting Chinese and German communities in Tasmania.

Outcomes

  • Promote QUM messages through diabetes education programs and publications.
  • Produce a DVD for consumers with type 2 diabetes (available in English, Chinese and German).
  • Develop relationships with the Migrant Resource Centre.

National Heart Foundation

About this project

This project aims to produce a culturally appropriate and consumer tested resource to support the quality use of medicines used in hypertension. This resource aims to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples understand hypertension and become more active partners in the management of their condition.

Target group

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with, or at risk of, hypertension, plus their extended family or carers.

Outcomes

  • Develop good external relationships — especially with groups who already engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • A resource for consumers focusing on QUM in hypertension and communication with health professionals.
  • Nationally implement resources.
