CMI leaflet

Consumer medicine information (CMI) leaflets have been written for most prescription and many non-prescription medicines. They explain how a medicine works, how and when to use it, common side effects, and potential interactions. Obtain the free CMI leaflet for your medicine from your pharmacist, Medicines Line, or the NPS website (www.nps.org.au/cmi).

Medicines Line

Ring Medicines Line on 1300 633 424 (1300 MEDICINE ). NPS works with healthdirect Australia to provide consumers with information on prescription, over-the-counter and complementary medicines. The service is available Monday–Friday 9 am–5 pm AEST for the cost of a local call (calls from mobiles may cost more).

Medicine brand choices

The NPS Why are we offered a choice of medicines? brochure helps you understand your choice of medicine brands and the importance of knowing the active ingredient in your medicine. This brochure is available in English, Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Greek, Italian,
Korean, Macedonian, Spanish and Vietnamese. Order free copies from the NPS website (www.nps.org.au/ordernow).

NPS Medicines List

Use an NPS Medicines List to keep an up-to-date record of all your medicines. Keep it with you at all times for emergencies, and take it whenever you go to a doctor, pharmacist, health centre or hospital. The list is available in English, Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Croatian, Greek, Italian, Korean, Macedonian, Spanish and Vietnamese and as an iPhone app. Order or download a Medicines List from the NPS website (www.nps.org.au/medicineslist).

Medication organisers

Medication organisers (also known as dose administration aids or DAAs) are plastic pill boxes that help you to remember which medicines to take and when to take them. Some, you fill yourself once a day or once a week. Others, called blister packs (e.g. Webster-paks), are filled by the pharmacist. To find out more, talk to your pharmacist.

MedicinesTalk is a free quarterly newsletter for consumers written by consumers about using medicines wisely. Subscribe to the hard copy version using our online ordering system, or write to MedicinesTalk, National Prescribing Service Limited, PO Box 1147, Strawberry Hills, NSW 2012.
