The National Prescribing Service (NPS) has worked with several community organisations to jointly develop resources for people with chronic conditions. Several are in languages other than English.

Explaining pain

People living with chronic pain know their pain all too well, but how do they explain it to a doctor? The pain booklet, Helping you manage your pain, produced by Arthritis NSW and NPS will make that task easier. It explains the causes of arthritis pain, helps people to prepare for their doctor visit, and provides a chart for recording their pain levels. A simple brochure about arthritis and pain has also been produced in traditional Chinese.

Using medicines wisely

Medicines are an important part of managing arthritis and chronic pain. To help people use medicines wisely, Arthritis SA gave a series of talks and distributed translated factsheets about the wise use of medicines to Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese communities in Adelaide.

Living with diabetes

Managing type 2 diabetes involves more than just medicines. Diabetes Tasmania and NPS have produced a DVD, Diabetes, medicines and me. It explains diabetes, its treatment, and explains the role of lifestyle factors like diet in maintaining control of the condition. The DVD is available to health professionals in English, and will be available in Cantonese, Mandarin and German soon.

Living with high blood pressure

To successfully control high blood pressure, it is essential that people take their medicines regularly, and become involved in their own health care. The National Heart Foundation and NPS are producing educational resources for health professionals to use in clinics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They are also producing resources about blood pressure for people to take home.
