After months in the planning several important parts of the National Prescribing Service's Community Quality Use of Medicines (CQUM) Program are taking shape.

Multicultural CQUM Program

This program aims to help people from multicultural backgrounds better understand their medicines through increased awareness of, and access to, credible and reliable information. It includes:

  • small grants to multicultural community groups to hold local activities that will increase people's medicines knowledge and skills
  • Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese versions of the Medimate booklet
  • teaching units and class information about medicines for new migrants who are learning English through the Adult Migrant Education Service.

The Multicultural Community Quality Use of Medicines Program is run in partnership with the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Council of Australia. The Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese versions of Medimate can be ordered here.

Seniors QUM Program

Medicines are a part of most people's lives, especially older people's. To help older people manage and get better results from their medicines, COTA National Seniors and NPS are offering free, interactive medicines information sessions for seniors groups.

The sessions are run by 'peer educators' — seniors who have completed a training course about medicines information and who know how to run interesting, interactive sessions for other seniors.

Around 1,200 sessions will be offered during 2005, across the country. For more information or to book a session for your seniors group, click here or contact COTA National Seniors in your state/territory:
