The National Prescribing Service (NPS) will begin rolling out the new community quality use of medicines (CQUM) program in January 2004.
A management committee was appointed earlier this year to guide and oversee the program. Members were appointed from a wide range of backgrounds. This was done to make sure the program is developed and implemented in close partnership with all the quality use of medicines stakeholders: GPs, pharmacists, specialists, nurses, other health professionals, government, pharmaceutical industry, and, particularly, consumer and community groups.
The management committee has a majority of consumer members. They provide advice on how to develop and prepare the CQUM program’s activities and resources so they meet the needs of consumers and consumer groups. They also link the program’s staff to existing consumer and community networks throughout Australia.
NPS Chief Executive Officer Lynn Weekes said, ‘The consumer members have put in a lot of hard work to date. They provide valuable insights into how to develop, implement and communicate with consumers and consumer groups about medicines issues.'
The remaining management committee members represent the other quality use of medicines stakeholders and NPS.
The Chair of the management committee is Judith Skinner of COTA National Seniors, an organisation that represents the interests of older people. She said, ‘When NPS asked me to chair this committee, I was thrilled. NPS has a good reputation with GPs, pharmacists and other health sectors, and this program will help provide much needed services and information to consumers.
The management committee members, NPS staff and Consumers’ Health Forum are all committed to making the program work, and I look forward to making it happen.' The management committee is working with the program’s staff to develop a national media campaign, written medicines information and resources for consumers, a peer education program for older people, and activities that reach people living in rural and remote areas.
