What is QUM (quality use of medicines)? What is QUM (quality use of medicines)?

MedicinesTalk aims to provide information about quality use of medicines. But, just what is ‘quality use of medicines’?

Quality use of medicines — often shortened to QUM — is all about using medicines appropriately to improve our health. QUM encompasses three main principles that apply equally to prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines bought at pharmacies and supermarkets, and herbal and natural medicines bought at healthfood shops and from alternative health practitioners.

  1. Choose the right type of therapy. Medicines are not always the best way to treat and prevent illness. For some conditions, there are better options. If there is a better option, it should be used where possible.
  2. If a medicine is the best option, choose the right medicine. When choosing a medicine, consideration should be given to the person and their illness, any other medicines being taken, and the risks and benefits of the possible medicines. The cost of the medicine to the person and the community should also be considered.
  3. Use the medicine safely and effectively. To get the best results, a medicine should be used at the right dose, with the right method of administration (e.g. tablet, injection or cream), and for the right length of time. And, its effects should be monitored to make sure it is working and no problems are developing. If a problem is suspected, action should be taken. Everyone has a part to play in QUM. Even though our doctors, pharmacists and alternative health practitioners often choose our medicines, it is us that must use them safely and effectively.
