This clinical audit provides GPs with the opportunity to review their management of patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, preferably who are current smokers.

Participation will assist GPs to:

  • recognise the importance of using spirometry to diagnose and assess severity of COPD
  • outline the role of short-acting beta2 agonists, long-acting beta2 agonists and inhaled corticosteroids in COPD
  • routinely identify and record patient smoking status, level of nicotine dependence and readiness to quit and recommend appropriate smoking cessation strategies
  • describe the benefits and adverse effects of non-drug and drug therapies for smoking cessation
  • regularly assess patient’s inhaler technique and adherence to medicines and provide education where appropriate
  • identify and refer patients who may benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation.

Initial data collection must by submitted to NPS by Friday 2 July 2010.

This clinical audit activity has been approved by the RACGP QA&CPD Program, total points: 40 (Category 1) and by the ACRRM PD Program for 30 points (extended skills) in the 2008–2010 triennium. Points are awarded only to participants who complete the review phase.

This audit is recognised for the Quality Prescribing Initiative of the Practice Incentives Program (May 2010 to April 2011).
