About Clinical audit: Review of PPI prescribing About Clinical audit: Review of PPI prescribing

Review of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) prescribing

This clinical audit targets judicious use PPIs. It provides GPs an opportunity to review the management of patients using PPIs, identify and implement a step-down strategy for suitable patients and review the concurrent use of drugs that may induce or exacerbate dyspepsia/ulceration.

Participation will assist GPs to:

  • List the different types of ‘step-down’ strategy.
  • Clarify the dosing schedule of PPIs in the ‘step-down’ strategy.
  • Develop a systems approach to identifying patients suitable for ‘step-down’ strategy in order to minimise potential rare but serious adverse effects.
  • Identify patients using a PPI for > 8 weeks with inadequate control of dyspeptic symptoms.
  • Recall which concurrent drugs can induce or exacerbate dyspepsia/ulceration.
  • Discuss potential rare but important adverse effects of PPI with patients.
  • Discuss strategies for long-term management of dyspepsia with patients.
  • Determine when to review PPI use for each clinical condition.
  • Recognise patients on maintenance use of PPI (> 8 weeks) requiring referral for investigation by endoscopy or specialist management.
Initial data collection needs to be submitted by 10 July 2009.

This clinical audit activity has been approved by the RACGP QA&CPD Program, total points: 40 (Category 1) and by the ACRRM PD Program for 30 points (extended skills) in the 2008–2010 triennium.
