Managing specific respiratory tract infections

This clinical audit targets judicious use of antibiotics for specific respiratory tract. It provides GP with an opportunity to review their current management of specific respiratory tract infections compared to best practice guidelines recommendations.

Participation will assist GPs to:

  • Identify clinical features suggestive of bacterial infection and patients at higher risk of complications when deciding whether to prescribe antibiotics for specific respiratory tract infections
  • Recall the appropriate dose, frequency and duration of antibiotic treatment for common respiratory tract infections
  • Describe the potential benefits and potential harms and role of cough and cold preparations in symptom management of respiratory tract infections
  • Address the patients’ or parents’/ carers’ expectations about antibiotics in common respiratory tract infections 
  • Judiciously consider a delayed prescription in patients not at high risk of complications and where a  bacterial cause for their symptoms is unlikely
  • Develop a systems approach to recall or advise children with acute otitis media and no systemic features or persistent pain and fever

This clinical audit activity has been approved by the RACGP QA&CPD Program, total points: 40 (Category 1) and by the ACRRM PD Program for 30 points (extended skills) in the 2008–2010 triennium. Points are awarded only to participants who complete the review phase. This audit is recognised for the Quality Prescribing Initiative of the Practice Incentives Program (May 2009 to April 2010).
