About Clinical e-Audit: Review of PPI prescribing
Reviewing PPI prescribingThis desktop clinical e-Audit provides GPs with the opportunity to review their management of patients using proton pump inhibitors against best practice guidelines.

Participation will assist GPs to:
- List the different types of ‘step-down’ strategy.
- Clarify the dosing schedule of PPIs in the ‘step-down’ strategy.
- Develop a systems approach to identifying patients suitable for ‘step-down’ strategy in order to minimise potential rare but serious adverse effects
- Identify patients using a PPI for > 8 weeks with inadequate control of dyspeptic symptoms.
- Recall which concurrent drugs can induce or exacerbate dyspepsia/ulceration (knowledge).
- Discuss potential rare but important adverse effects of PPI with patients
- Discuss strategies for long-term management of dyspepsia with patients.
- Determine when to review PPI use for each clinical condition.
- Recognise patients on maintenance use of PPI (> 8 weeks) requiring referral for investigation by endoscopy or specialist management.
This clinical audit activity has been approved by the RACGP QA&CPD Program, total points: 40 (Category 1) and by the ACRRM PD Program for 30 points (extended skills) in the 2008–2010 triennium. Points are awarded only to participants who complete the review phase.
This audit is recognised for the Quality Prescribing Initiative of the Practice Incentives Program for the year (1 May to 30 April) in which the clinical audit cycle is completed.
