In addition to NPS Facilitator visits, NPS offers small group case-based discussions through our partnership with the local Divisions of General Practice across Australia.
Small group discussions form one of our multi-faceted evidence-based strategies to improve the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM). These groups are run by NPS Facilitators who are trained to develop the communication and facilitation skills necessary to deliver successful small group discussions.
Small group discussions typically involve up to eight GPs, pharmacists and/or practice nurses. These sessions utilise the concept of problem-based learning, thus a case scenario depicting real clinical dilemmas is used as the basis of discussing information and evidence relating to a therapeutic topic. Additionally, small group discussions provide an opportunity for health professionals to meet together, share knowledge and experience, and learn from their peers.
Small group discussions are recognised by a number of health professional bodies as contributing to continuing professional development. They also qualify as an activity for the Quality Prescribing Initiative (QPI) of the Practice Incentives Program (PIP).
To find out which topic your local Division of General Practice is currently offering or to express your interest in participating, please contact the NPS Facilitator at your local Division of General Practice.
