Why should Australia be medicinewise? Why should Australia
be medicinewise?

What's this 'medicinewise' I've been hearing about?

NPS wants all Australians to make better health and medicines decisions. We’ve launched a national Be medicinewise campaign, introducing the term ‘medicinewise’ as shorthand for quality use of medicines and medical tests. The campaign has wide media coverage, and is designed to get your patients thinking about asking questions and having more informed conversations – before they make a decision about their health and medicines.

Adding value to patient conversations

As the campaign will have wide media coverage, your patients may refer to it in their conversations with you. You can download consumer resources such as our Medicines List (English version) to share with patients. Medicines List is also available in other languages.

At the highest level, the consumer messages will be:

  • Know it’s a medicine (understanding that medicines aren’t just those you get with a prescription, they include herbal remedies and come in many forms)
  • Find the active ingredient (so you don’t accidentally double dose or mix up medicines)
  • Ask the right questions (from trusted sources, so you can get the most out of your medicines and make better informed decisions about them).

Learn about the campaign

We have partnered with the Seven Media Group to create Be Medicinewise week (which starts on 30th January 2011) with the aim of raising the profile of being medicinewise through a number of editorial and feature pieces across different media.

The campaign will also include advertising and editorial features across a range of different media including television, radio, print and online. Our television editorial segments will feature well known personalities such as Dr D’Arcy, Tom Williams and Mel Doyle.

The television commercial component will also be aired nationwide from January 30. You can view the TV commercials here.

From March onwards we will also be launching other NPS programs about managing pain and generic medicines. These will also have high media profiles. More details will be uploaded to the NPS site as they become available.
