What is TAIS?
The Therapeutic Advice and Information Service (TAIS) is a medicines information line specifically for health professionals including doctors, pharmacists and nurses. It is staffed by specialist drug information pharmacists and will be funded by the National Prescribing Service until 30 June 2010.
Services include:
- Information on new drugs, complementary medicines and medicines reported in the media.
- Information on newly emerging side effects.
- Advice on the clinical importance of potential drug interactions.
- Identification of foreign drugs and recommendation of therapeutic equivalents.
- Assessment of expected benefits and potential risks of medicines.
- Information on drugs in pregnancy and lactation.
Examples of TAIS complex drug enquiries
- Is there a clinically important drug interaction if glucosamine is taken by a patient stablised on warfarin?
- Should fenofibrate be continued if liver function tests are abnormal after commencing therapy?
- How clinically important is the interaction between amoxycillin and low-dose methotrexate?
- What dose of vitamin D is required to treat a proven deficiency? Can it be given by injection for a patient with poor oral absorption?
- I’ve heard about adverse cardiovascular effects with glitazones. Can you give me an update?
- Is there any evidence for the use of co-enzyme Q-10 for myalgia that occurs with bisphosphonates?
