Information about the discontinuation of funding for TAIS Information about the discontinuation of funding for TAIS

Following an internal review NPS has decided to discontinue funding the Therapeutic Advice and Information Service (TAIS) as of 30 June 2010. This decision was made by the NPS Board of independent directors.

TAIS is valued as an excellent service by its users and this was a particularly difficult decision for the NPS Board to make. However, as an organisation funded by the public for quality use of medicines, we have a responsibility to ensure all of our products and services meet the needs of our diverse audiences, represent value for money and are sustainable in the long term.

With the level of funding available from NPS, the current TAIS model is not sustainable given its total cost and limited reach. TAIS has operated at maximum call capacity for several years, receiving around 6000 calls per annum.

We are very grateful to the consortium of drug information services that provide TAIS on behalf of NPS. We would like to acknowledge the very high quality of the service and the commitment of the service providers to excellence in service delivery since the inception of TAIS.

The TAIS consortium includes:
  • Austin Health Drug Information, Austin Health, Victoria
  • Hunter Drug Information Service, Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital, New South Wales
  • Queensland Drug Information Centre, Royal Brisbane and Women’s  Hospital, Queensland
  • Medicines Contact Centre, Mater Pharmacy Services, Mater Health Brisbane, Queensland
  • WA Drug Information Service, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Western Australia
  • Drug and Therapeutics Information Service, Pharmacy Department, Repatriation General Hospital, South Australia.
Over the coming months NPS will highlight to health professionals information to support their medicines information needs. We have also sought recommendations from members and stakeholders about alternate medicines information sources. An important element of this will be to build the drug information skills of health professionals so that a referral service is less necessary.

TAIS will continue to operate as normal until 30 June 2010. If you would like to provide NPS with any feedback please use the online feedback page.
