NPS Diagnostics initiative NPS Diagnostics initiative

NPS received Commonwealth funding in 2009 to help requestors improve their utilisation of diagnostic tests. Medicines use and diagnostic testing are closely linked in many areas of clinical practice, so wherever feasible we will develop synergistic programs to optimise health outcomes.

Objectives of our Diagnostics initiative include:
  • better utilisation of diagnostic tests
  • reductions in the growth rate of over-ordered tests
  • better utilisation for consumers in need
  • growth rates in under-ordered tests
  • improved health professional knowledge
  • improved community awareness about diagnostic testing.
NPS has a strong track record in designing and implementing interventions to improve medicines use. Our Diagnostics initiative builds on this expertise to improve utilisation of diagnostic tests and enable people to make the best decisions for better health outcomes.

Any enquiries about this program should be directed to Dean Meston, Manager, Diagnostics Initiative or phone 02 8217 8736.

Medicare Benefits Schedule data feedback

For selected topics, NPS will provide individualised Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) data feedback to be used as a tool for personal reflection on imaging and pathology referral patterns. MBS data are not accessible by any other organisation or individual and are not used for regulatory purposes.

An example of the recent MBS data feedback on Vitamin D monitoring is shown.
