Community-acquired pneumonia: towards improving outcomes nationally (CAPTION) project 2004–2005 Community-acquired pneumonia: towards improving outcomes nationally (CAPTION) project 2004–2005

Judicious use of antibiotics in the management of community acquired pneumonia is vital to reduce selection of bacterial resistance in hospitals and the community. The Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic, Version 12, 2003 incorporated a validated severity assessment tool, the Pneumonia Severity Index, and specific recommendations of antibiotic therapy to assist healthcare professionals in managing patients diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia. However, there is evidence that knowledge of and adherence of these guidelines is suboptimal.

The primary aim of the CAPTION project was to introduce and implement the community-acquired pneumonia recommendations of the Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic, Version 12, 2003 in 40 Australian hospital emergency departments.

A baseline audit evaluating current practice commenced in July 2004 in hospital emergency departments (EDs). Twenty eight EDs conducted two educational interventions, each followed by an audit which was completed in 2005.

The baseline data for the study has been published in The Medical Journal of Australia 21 November 2005 183 (10): 520-524
