How to print a pre-existing NPS patient information leaflet (PIL) from Best PracticeHow to print a pre-existing NPS patient information leaflet (PIL) from Best Practice

The NPS PILs available within Best PracticeTM for patient use can be printed:

  • for general distribution (e.g. in bulk)
  • for a specific patient (with the ability to record this within the patient record*).

For general distribution

  1. Close all patient records Best PracticeTM before accessing this feature.
  2. From the ‘View’ menu, select the ‘Patient Education material’ option.
  3. From the ‘Patient Education materials’ window, expand the NPS branch to locate the required patient education leaflet.
  4. Click to view the leaflet.
  5. In the Adobe Acrobat window, click on the printer icon to print the document.
  6. Close the Adobe Acrobat window to return to the ‘Patient Education materials’ window.

For a specific patient*

  1. Open the relevant patient’s record in Best PracticeTM before accessing this feature.
  2. From the ‘View’ menu, select the ‘Patient Education material’ option, OR click on the ‘Patient education leaflets’ icon.
  3. From the ‘Patient Education materials’ window, expand the NPS branch to locate the required PIL.
  4. Click to view the leaflet.
  5. In the Adobe Acrobat window, click on the printer icon to print the document.
  6. Close the Adobe Acrobat window to return to the ‘Patient Education materials’ window.
  7. Click on the ‘mark as printed’ to identify the leaflet as printed for the patient.*
  8. Close the ‘Patient Education materials’ window.

The ‘mark as printed’ icon does not function here (see ‘For a specific patient’ for further details*).

To identify retrospectively that a patient has been given a PIL, follow the ‘For a specific patient’ instructions, skipping step 5.

The patient’s record will now show this leaflet as having been printed — as an action under ‘Today’s notes’ folder on the day of visit and then under the ‘Past visits’ folder.*
* The function to record that a PIL has been printed and given to a specific patient (via the ‘mark as printed’ icon) is only available from Best PracticeTM version 1.6.1.432 onwards.

TIP

When printing a PIL (e.g. from Adobe Acrobat window), check that in the ‘print’ dialog box, under ‘Page Handling’, ‘Page Scaling’ is set to ‘Shrink to Printable Area’. This ensures there would be no missing information as the content of the page is scaled down (if necessary) to fit the printable area.
