Information for health professionals

Antipsychotic medicines, also known as neuroleptics, are used in the pharmacological treatment of many psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).

There is good evidence that antipsychotics are effective treatment for people with schizophrenia. When non-pharmacological methods have been unsuccessful, risperidone is PBS listed for treating psychotic symptoms and aggression in people with dementia. The place of antipsychotics in treating other conditions varies and in many cases specialist advice is recommended.

The medicine’s safety and the tolerability profile is one of the key factors that need to be considered to determine the choice of antipsychotic for each patient. Engaging patients and/or carers in recognising and managing adverse effects may translate into better patient-clinician relationship and consequently adherence to therapy.
