Australians aged 65 years and over are at risk of medicines related mix-ups with more than 86% taking one or more medicines at any one time. About 140,000 people are admitted to hospital as a result of mix-ups with their medicines every year.Trained volunteers are offering tailored information sessions to seniors’ clubs and social groups. “These sessions, given by seniors, for seniors, will discuss how to talk with your doctor or pharmacist to better understand and learn about your medicines,” said Jane Newsome, the COTA (WA) State coordinator.
“Good health and medicines use are important issues for many seniors and it is hoped that these sessions will give seniors the opportunity to discuss their medicines issues and build on their existing knowledge and understanding,” said Mrs Newsome.
“It is quick and easy to book a session, and we can match your group to a volunteer that suits you.
“These interactive sessions are part of a national program – Seniors Quality Use of Medicines Program – an initiative of the National Prescribing Service Limited in collaboration with COTA National Seniors. Nearly 20 volunteers have hosted over 170 information sessions for seniors in Western Australia, and more than 23,000 seniors have attended sessions across the country.” Mrs Newsome continued.
For independent, accurate and up-to-date information about medicines, seniors can call Medicines Line on 1300 888 763 Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm EST for the cost of a local call.
If you have emergency concerns about your medicines arising from an overdose or suspected poisoning, call the Poisons Information Centre, 24 hours a day, on 131 126. For all other emergencies call 000, 24 hours a day, and ask for an ambulance.
