1. Why am I taking Palonosetron Medsurge?
Palonosetron Medsurge contains the active ingredient palonosetron hydrochloride. Palonosetron is used in the prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by cytotoxic chemotherapy, prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) for up to 24 hours following surgery.

Do not take if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Palonosetron Medsurge or any of the ingredients listed at the end of the CMI.
Talk to your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, take any other medicines, or are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

1. Why am I taking Palonosetron Medsurge?
Palonosetron Medsurge contains the active ingredient palonosetron hydrochloride. Palonosetron is used in the prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by cytotoxic chemotherapy, prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) for up to 24 hours following surgery. Palonosetron belongs to a group of medicines known as serotonin (5-HT3) antagonists.
2. What should I know before I take Palonosetron Medsurge?
Warnings
Do not take Palonosetron Medsurge if:
- you are allergic to palonosetron hydrochloride or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
- Always check the ingredients to make sure you can use this medicine.
Check with your doctor if you:
- are pregnant or think you might be, your doctor will not use this medicine unless it is clearly necessary as it is not known
During treatment, you may be at risk of developing certain side effects. It is important you understand these risks and how to monitor for them. See additional information under Section 6. Are there any side effects?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed.
It is not known if this medicine is found in breast milk. You should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using it if you are breast-feeding.
3. What if I am taking other medicines?
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including any medicines, vitamins or supplements that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.
Some medicines may affect the way other medicines work. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to tell you what to do when being given this medicine with other medicines.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure about what medicines, vitamins or supplements you are taking and if these affect Palonosetron Medsurge.
4. How do I take Palonosetron Medsurge?
How much to take / use
- Palonosetron Medsurge is given as an injection into a vein. A doctor or nurse will normally inject it
- Your doctor will decide how much of this medicine you will be given and for how long.
When to take / use Palonosetron Medsurge
- about 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy or
- right before anaesthesia for surgery.
- Palonosetron Medsurge is intended for single use in one patient.
If you take too much Palonosetron Medsurge
As Palonosetron Medsurge is given to you under the supervision of your doctor, it is very unlikely that you will receive too much. However, if you experience any side effects after being given it, tell your doctor immediately.
You should immediately:
- phone the Poisons Information Centre
(by calling 13 11 26), or - contact your doctor, or
- go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital.
You should do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.
5. What should I know while taking Palonosetron Medsurge?
Things you should do
If the medicine starts to upset you or your symptoms become worse, tell your doctor.
Tell any other doctors, dentists, and pharmacists who are treating you that you are being treated with this medicine.
Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment with this medicine.
Driving or using machines
Be careful before you drive or use any machines or tools until you know how Palonosetron Medsurge affects you.
Palonosetron Medsurge may induce dizziness, somnolence or fatigue. If you experience any of these symptoms, do not drive, operate machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous.
Looking after your medicine
- Store below 25°C.
- Store in the original container.
- Keep the container in the outer carton to protect from light.
Keep it where young children cannot reach it.
Getting rid of any unwanted medicine
If you no longer need to use this medicine or it is out of date, take it to any pharmacy for safe disposal.
Do not take this medicine after the expiry date.
6. Are there any side effects?
All medicines can have side effects. If you do experience any side effects, most of them are minor and temporary. However, some side effects may need medical attention. See the information below and, if you need to, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any further questions about side effects.
