1. Why am I using TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
TRANEXAMIC-AFT contains the active ingredient Tranexamic acid.
TRANEXAMIC-AFT is used to prevent excessive bleeding in patients with traumatic hyphaema (bleeding into the front part of the eye), blood clotting disorders, who are having minor surgery, heavy periods, hereditary angioneurotic oedema (periodic swelling of the throat).

2. What should I know before I use TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Tranexamic acid or any of the ingredients listed at the end of the CMI.
Talk to your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, take any other medicines, or are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

3. What if I am taking other medicines?
Some medicines may interfere with TRANEXAMIC-AFT and affect how it works.

4. How do I use TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
- Take the dose prescribed by your doctor. It may vary depending upon the type and severity of the infection. The dose will also vary for children depending upon their age and weight.
- Follow the instructions provided and take TRANEXAMIC-AFT for as long as your doctor tells you, even if you are feeling better.

6. Are there any side effects?
- Serious side effects: related to Cardiovascular (Low blood pressure from rapid administration of TRANEXAMIC-AFT, unexpected swelling in your legs or arms). Nervous system (giddiness or dizziness, convulsions). Eye (changes in your eyesight). Pain (unexpected pain). Skin (allergic skin reactions). Go straight to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital if you notice any of these serious side effects.
- Less serious side effects: related to Gastrointestinal (nausea or vomiting, diarrhoea, epigastric distress). Following cardiac surgery, total knee replacement or total hip replacement surgery: Cardiovascular (irregular and often rapid heartbeat, heart attack, slow or irregular heartbeat, cardiogenic shock, stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Gastrointestinal (bowel infarction). Renal (kidney problems). Lung and upper airways (difficulty breathing).

1. Why am I using TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
TRANEXAMIC-AFT contains the active ingredient Tranexamic acid. TRANEXAMIC-AFT is an antifibrinolytic that works by slowing the processes that cause bleeding.
TRANEXAMIC-AFT is used to prevent excessive bleeding in patients with:
- traumatic hyphaema (bleeding into the front part of the eye)
- blood clotting disorders, who are having minor surgery.
- heavy periods
- hereditary angioneurotic oedema (periodic swelling of the throat)
It may also be used to reduce bleeding and the need for transfusion of blood in patients undergoing heart surgery, total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgery.
Your doctor may have prescribed TRANEXAMIC-AFT for another reason. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why TRANEXAMIC-AFT has been prescribed for you.
This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription.
2. What should I know before I use TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
Warnings
Do not use TRANEXAMIC-AFT if:
- have an allergy to tranexamic acid or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may be:
- shortness of breath
- wheezing or difficulty breathing
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body
- rash
- itching or hives on the skin. - Always check the ingredients to make sure you can use this medicine.
- are being treated for stroke.
- are being treated for blood clots in your legs, lungs or anywhere else in your body.
- have a problem with colour vision that developed after you were born.
Check with your doctor if you:
- you, or someone in your family, has ever suffered from blood clots.
- severe bruising
- kidney disease with or without blood in the urine
- irregular periods and the reason is not known.
- have or have ever suffered from convulsion, fits or seizures before you start taking Tranexamic-AFT. Convulsions, fits or seizures have been reported with Tranexamic-AFT treatment.
- take any medicines for any other condition.
- you have any allergies to any medicines, foods, preservatives, colours.
During treatment, you may be at risk of developing certain side effects. It is important you understand these risks and how to monitor for them. See additional information under Section 6. Are there any side effects?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed.
3. What if I am taking other medicines?
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including any medicines, vitamins, or supplements that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket, or health food shop.
Some medicines may interfere with TRANEXAMIC-AFT and affect how it works.
- other medicines used to prevent bleeding
- medicines used to thin the blood
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure about what medicines, vitamins or supplements you are taking and if these affect TRANEXAMIC-AFT.
4. How do I use TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
How much to take / use
Cardiac Surgery and Total Knee or Total Hip Replacement Surgery
- Tranexamc Acid Injection will be administered under medical supervision to reduce blood loss during cardiac surgery or during your knee or hip replacement surgery.
- Your doctor will determine the dose that you will be given, based on your weight. The dose used in children undergoing heart surgery may be different to the dose used in adult heart surgery.
- The dose may vary depending on whether you suffer from diseases relating to the kidneys. Take the dose prescribed by your doctor. It may vary depending upon the type and severity of the infection. The dose will also vary for children depending upon their age and weight.
How to use TRANEXAMIC-AFT
- TRANEXAMIC-AFT is given as an injection by a doctor or trained nurse.
If you forget to use TRANEXAMIC-AFT
TRANEXAMIC-AFT should be used regularly at the same time each day. If you miss your dose at the usual time:
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to.
Otherwise take it as soon as you remember and then go back to taking the medicine as you would normally.
Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you missed. This may increase the chance of you getting an unwanted side effect.
If you use too much TRANEXAMIC-AFT
TRANEXAMIC-AFT is given under the close supervision of your doctor; therefore, it is very unlikely that you will receive too much.
Symptoms from taking too much or being given too much Tranexamic-AFT include:
- dizziness
- headache
- nausea
- diarrhoea
- low blood pressure
- convulsions, fits or seizures.
If you think that you have used too much TRANEXAMIC-AFT, you may need urgent medical attention.
You should immediately:
- phone the Poisons Information Centre
(by calling 13 11 26), or - contact your doctor, or
- go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital.
You should do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning.
5. What should I know while using TRANEXAMIC-AFT?
Things you should do
Tell any other doctors, dentists, and pharmacists that you are being treated with Tranexamic-AFT.
If you start on any new medicine, tell your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist that you are being treated with Tranexamic-AFT.
Things you should not do
Do not use TRANEXAMIC-AFT to treat any other complaints unless your doctor tells you to.
Do not give TRANEXAMIC-AFT to anyone else even if they have the same condition as you.
Looking after your medicine
- TRANEXAMIC-AFT is stored by hospital staff in the pharmacy or in the ward.
- The undiluted product should be stored in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
- This product does not contain antimicrobial agents. It is for single use in one patient only.
- If storage of the diluted solution is necessary, it should be stored at 2-8°C for a maximum of 24 hours. Any unused solution should be discarded.
When to discard your medicine
The hospital staff will dispose of any leftover TRANEXAMIC-AFT.
6. Are there any side effects?
All medicines can have side effects. If you do experience any side effects, most of them are minor and temporary. However, some side effects may need medical attention. See the information below and, if you need to, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any further questions about side effects.
